Clio's Musings

By Paula A. Copestick

On November 16, 1776, Margaret Corbin became "the first American woman to take a soldier's part in the War for Liberty". The Americans were defending Fort Washington, and when her husband was killed, Margaret fired the cannon throughout the remainder of the battle. Enemy grapeshot left her permanently without the use of her left arm. The Pension Application Records of Revolutionary Soldiers report "Capt. Molly" to be the first woman to receive a U.S. pension, although they still rank her below soldier.

The first Birth Control Conference was launched in New York on November 14, 1921 by Margaret Sanger, under the auspices of the new American Birth Control League. When Ms. Sanger arrived at the conference, she found the doors barred by burly policemen as a large, noisy crowd collected. Sanger managed to slip into the hall and was lifted to the platform, where she was arrested by a poiiceman who stated, "You can't talk here....An indecent, immoral subject is to be discussed...A"

The raid of a public lecture hall by city authorities shocked the public and brought the cause of birth

control much favorable publicity. The Cleveland Plain Dealer (November 14, 1921) reports, "Mrs. Margaret Sanger and Miss Mary Windsor were...taken to the police station last night and charged with disorderly conduct. Later they were released without bail in the custody of their counsel. The charges were subsequently dismissed, and a few days later another meeting was held in a packed hall.

As Ms. Sanger put it, "They who today deny the right of a woman to control her own body seek with the hardihood of invincible ignorance or with the folly of those blind ones who in all ages have opposed the light of progress."
